Thanks for joining us and I hope you enjoy your stay!! Welcome to HeavyEquipmentForums. What Is Fluid Film? For those unfamiliar or unsure what Fluid Film is all about, I thought I would take a second to explain what sets Fluid Film apart from all the competition. Fluid Film contains no solvents. That statement alone means a number of things: 1 No evaporation.
No evaporation means more useable product, which in turn means more bang for your buck. With solvent-based materials, the end product ends up being a gummy, sticky mess. Fluid Film will NEVER get tacky, retaining a super-slick consistency that provides excellent lubrication for moving parts on all metals. No solvents means no ozone depleting chemicals contaminating the atmosphere. This system is designed for rapid delivery of Fluid Film on your surface.
While designed for undercoating cars and trucks, this system can be used on any surface that requires covering a larger area quickly. Don't confuse this with some wimpy little hand pump sprayer, this tool makes noise like any good tool should. The reservoir handles 32 oz. An air compressor is required to use this product. After 4 days of exposure, it is obvious which side was treated and which side was not.
Congrats Fluid Film! You can use the standard Fluid Film in this gun. In fact, we recommend it. Short Answer: Automotive undercoating is important to help prevent rust and corrosion, especially in colder climates. For more about Fluid Film and its competitors, see below. Undercoating is applied to the metal surfaces of your car primarily the underbody to prevent water and salt from sticking to the metal and causing rust. Some undercoating products can also be sprayed inside the doors to prevent rust and lubricate things like the window mechanisms.
Dealerships will often apply paint or wax to the underbody, but this type of undercoating is typically not an effective way of preventing rust in the long-term. Over time, the paint may start flaking off, or the wax may start to crack, allowing moisture to penetrate the metal surfaces and begin corroding them. Oil-based undercoating is proven to work especially well in regions with harsh winters, where cities apply salt to the roads for safety, as salt increases the speed at which metal will rust.
Of course, for an oil-based coating to work, proper application and reapplication practices must be followed. Applying a protective coating once, such as when you purchase a car, will only protect it for that year. Fluid Film is an oil-based automotive undercoating. The product is non-toxic — its base ingredient is lanolin — and it contains no heavy metals, phenols, arsenic, or other harmful ingredients.
The product is available in spray cans or larger-quantity undercoating kits, and you can apply it to the exposed metal surfaces or underbody of your vehicle yourself. Fluid Film is an effective undercoating, according to both mechanics and customer reviews.
Stotts Industrial, the manufacturer and distributor of Fluid Film, also provides additional customer testimonials. While dealerships and service centers may charge high prices for undercoating services, you can apply Fluid Film yourself, making it a cheaper, effective way to protect your car from weather and elements. Fluid Film is widely available at auto parts stores and other retailers, including websites like Amazon and farm equipment retailers like John Deere.
Fluid Film and other popular undercoating products — such as Krown and NH Oil Undercoating — are an effective way to prevent or delay rust and corrosion. Each of these companies offers different options for application, warranty coverage, and price points. The brand that will best fit your needs ultimately depends on where you live, whether you want to do the work yourself or have a professional application, and your budget.
You can use the table below for a quick comparison of each brand, then click any product or scroll for more information. If you live in an area that regularly salts the roads in the winter, using some sort of rust prevention can help your vehicle last longer and avoid salt damage.
Whether you chose to go with a professional application or a DIY kit, products like Fluid Film, Krown, and NH Oil Undercoating can help protect your car from the harmful effects of road salt.
While Krown requires professional application, you can purchase and apply Fluid Film and NH Oil Undercoating products to protect your car yourself. The key to rust and corrosion prevention is to be as proactive as possible and apply the product every year.

Unlike many oil-based products on the market, there are no solvents in the product. When there are no solvents, there are almost no VOCs to evaporate. With very low VOCs, everything that you apply stays on the surface to protect it from rust.
Not only is this method more environmentally friendly, but it allows the product to go further per ounce than solvent based products. Fluid Film rust preventer can be applied to just about any indoor or outdoor surface. Since it is a non-drying product, it will leave a thin wet film. After 4 days of exposure, it is obvious which side was treated and which side was not. Congrats Fluid Film! Where most products contain between seventy and ninety percent solvent, Fluid Film contains none except for its propellant, meaning long lasting lubrication and protection.
With no solvent, Fluid Film won't evaporate or become sticky or gummy, allowing it to migrate to other areas for lubrication or protection. With its unique lanolin base, Fluid Film will actually embed itself in the pores of metal, resisting wash off and keeping moisture and oxygen from getting to the base metal. Containing no solvent content, Fluid Film lends itself to numerous applications where the comparative solvent-based products would not even be considered.
Fluid Film is classified as a non-toxic and non-hazardous liquid and contains less than one percent VOC content. Lower VOC content helps eliminate the use of ozone-depleting chemicals in the atmosphere. Fluid Film contains no solvents, phenols, heavy metals, arsenic, pcb's, pc's, tcdd's or other dioxin related substances.
It is manufactured using an all natural lanolin base. It has no adverse effect on plastic or synthetic rubber, but it may cause some swelling on natural rubber. Because Fluid Film leaves a wet, non-drying film and embeds itself in the pores of the metal, any surface treated with Fluid Film should be wiped down with a good biodegradable cleaner before painting. No, Fluid Film is not formulated to remove rust.
However, if applied over existing rust, it will stop it immediately from spreading further. Fluid Film will penetrate rust and rust scale to the base metal, loosening and easing in the removal process. Yes, it's an excellent way to prevent corrosion on battery terminals.
The non-drying nature will provide long term protection. Because it remains wet, you'll see an initial light dusting, but because it doesn't have any solvents it won't become sticky and gum up or create a build-up of dirt.
It is non-conductive, so be sure to establish all connections prior to application. Yes, a light application is all that's needed to provide long term lubrication for lock assemblies, even in freezing temperatures. You bet your boots you can! Fluid Film is an excellent conditioner for leather products and will not only soften but also weather proof your leather work boots.
Does Fluid Film work on snow blowers, snowmobiles, shovels and other snow removal equipment? Yes, it will prevent snow from sticking to the surface. Application may be required prior to each use. Fluid Film is an all purpose chain lube due to its non-solvent application.
Spray Fluid Film directly on the chain, wiping off excess with a clean rag. Fluid Film will migrate into all areas, providing long-lasting lubrication and protection from rust.
