Look no further than our breakdown of illustration jobs below, in which we unpack what the work entails, why you might love or hate it, how to get into the role, and ultimately, what you can expect as an average salary.

It should be noted that salary figures provided below, as with any creative industry, are ballpark figures only. One of the most highly coveted jobs on this list, and as a result, one of the most competitive fields to break into.

Attracting an audience via a web comic is a good place to start, though even that is a highly saturated market to break into these days.

From one of the most sought-after jobs on the list to one of the quirkiest, being a courtroom sketch artist requires an extreme amount of skill. Not only do media outlets demand as much accuracy and realism as possible, but a lot of that has to come from memory alone. Courtroom Illustrator Salary: Very few salaried positions exist, as work is sporadic.

No figures on earnings exist either. From the courtroom to the scene of the crime itself, criminal sketch artists also require an extreme amount of skill and discipline but of a different kind; working one-on-one with an often emotionally frayed victim to produce an accurate facial sketch with nothing more than a hazy description from which to go off. Psychological qualifications are also a bonus. Very few movies and commercials these days — even those of a tiny budget — are created without the use of a storyboard to plan out all the shots before production begins.

For that, the team needs a storyboard illustrator. Storyboard Illustrator Career Path: Paying work is generally garnered through a strong portfolio, so it can take some time to work up from volunteered work. Certain jobs also require not just good illustration skills, but also proficiency in 3D modeling software. Cons: Can be a highly pressurized environment to work in, with demands from numerous team members coming in from all angles.

Sc degree in a related field as well as illustration proficiency, of course. The field is governed by the Board of Certification of Medical Illustrators. Working in one of the most cut-throat industries in the world, fashion illustrators typically work in either a design or advertising setting to bring sartorial ideas to life. It is often necessary to relocate to a large city in order to find a regular stream of paying work.

This is the top of the creative pile within the field of illustration. Fine artists create work with the intent to sell them for their aesthetic value, making it a job that is highly depending on accolade, talent, and the current state of the market.

Most children's book illustrators are self-employed and are hired by book publishers per job. This is because every illustrator has his own style and publishers typically prefer to have different styles for each book they publish.

Rather than rely on in-house illustrators, publishers choose freelance illustrators who they think will best suit each book. This means that, to make a living, illustrators must be business people as well as artists.

Much of a children's book illustrator's time is spent in the illustration process. This may include sketching rough ideas of what the characters will look like, depicting the characters in the book's different scenes, finalizing sketches and coloring.

How to start as an illustrator ~ Frannerd

Rarely does an idea appear fully formed in the illustrator's mind to be transmitted to the page unaltered. Whether he is illustrating his own book or one that was written by another person, the illustrator will draw, assess the drawing, incorporate the publisher's or writer's comments, change it, scrap it and start over, until he's satisfied with each illustration. His days are often long, and he must stay committed to the work, finding ways to stay motivated and inspired.

An illustrator is hired by a publisher or, less commonly, by the writer. The two parties agree on terms up front, negotiating if necessary until both sides are in agreement on how much the illustrator will be paid, what he will do, and what time frame he must do it in. When terms are met, both sides sign the contract. This is often the least enjoyable part of the illustrator's job because it's not creative, and discussing payment can produce tension. A very successful illustrator might have an agent handle the negotiating for him, but he still needs to read contracts carefully before signing them so he knows what he has agreed to do.

When the work is completed, he makes sure he receives payment per the contract's terms. Every project comes with a deadline or, more likely, several deadlines. Submitting work on time is crucial to receiving more work in the industry, so the illustrator must pay close attention to scheduling his workdays so he stays on target to meet his deadlines.

Each project will have a deadline for initial concepts, revisions and final art. If he realizes he's not able to meet a deadline due to unforeseen circumstances -- such as approval for initial concepts taking longer than expected -- he needs to advise the publisher of the situation so other deadlines can be adjusted and the appropriate people notified. An illustrator doesn't work in a vacuum. He receives direction from the publisher's art director in initial discussions.

In a meeting or phone call, they discuss specifics of the book or its characters. After initial sketches are submitted, the art director provides feedback to the illustrator, incorporating comments from others on the creative team. If the sketches are approved as is, or after revisions, the illustrator is given the go-ahead to take the book to the next stage. The final step is to turn the sketches into colored, finished art and put the illustrations and text together in book format.

Children's book illustrators aren't required to have a college degree or any specific training. Publishers choose an illustrator based on his style of work. However, most illustrators find they need some kind of formal training to get to the point where their work is good enough to draw the attention of publishers.Skip to Job PostingsSearch Close.
